The elder boy
Was a fearless boy. He learned To climb up high, the castle’s body.
Every crevice a corridor, the
Roots ran of rivers, strong and
Beautiful. The younger boy climbed
Only once.
This poem blends the mysticism of willow trees with the transience of time. Inspired by an old tree hidden at Rebecca's childhood home, this piece is a tribute to the warm memories of her younger days. She grew up listening to its fluttering leaves in the summer and its dancing branches of snow and ice in the winter. As time passed and the world changed, the willow tree always remained, its song never-ending. SUGAR recreates this gentle beauty's inviting nature as it tells a story of brothers growing older, hiding their secret beneath its weeping canopy.
SUGAR is available for viewing. Originally written for literary competitions, it is a poetic epilogue of Rebecca's short story WHEN THE STEAM FALLS.
