short story  |  06.23
Skeletons of abandoned cars peek out of the ditch. The road is just as I remember. Narrow and winding, gravel spattered with an unforgiving shoulder. When we were kids, we pretended the ditch and streams were our moats, protecting us from the evil creatures of the forest and our home.
This chilling short story follows a pair of sisters returning to their family's abandoned estate after twelve years, confronting the tragedy that tore them away. At an isolated country home covered in dust and broken glass, ghosts of their last days lay untouched. The nearby sea remains a steady hum and the boathouse is chained the same, but their hidden cavern along the shore is not what it used to be before. Rebecca's THE HOME WE LEFT tests the bonds of sisters as they learn to forgive and move on, bringing the reader into a tense, deafeningly quiet atmosphere where their secret has no place to hide.
